Halloween
The October 31 holiday. In Japan it is primarily celebrated as a costume event by young adults and as a children's craft/treat theme; trick-or-treating is rare. Shibuya's massive street gatherings made it a major commercial event in the 2010s.
Sometimes written ハロウィーン with a long vowel. From English "Halloween."
Common collocations
- ハロウィンパーティー: Halloween party
- ハロウィンの仮装: Halloween costume
- ハロウィン衣装: Halloween outfit
- トリック・オア・トリート: trick or treat
Cultural note
Halloween in Japan is mostly an adult costume event, especially in places like Shibuya, rather than a children's trick-or-treat tradition. Themed sweets, decorations, and limited-edition products fill stores from early October.
