kanji approved for personal names
A government-designated list of about 860 kanji that may be used in a child's given name in addition to the general-use 常用漢字. Characters outside both lists cannot be registered at the city office.
Defined by ministerial ordinance and revised occasionally, usually when parents petition for a character. The list exists to keep names readable and registrable, so it includes many older or decorative characters that are not part of everyday writing.
