elementary-school kanji; the education kanji
The 1,026 kanji that Japanese children learn during the six years of elementary school, assigned grade by grade. Materials for beginners and children are often written using only these characters.
Also called 学習漢字. The grade assignment is the 学年別漢字配当表, which is why Japanese materials often label a kanji as "grade 3" or "grade 5".
