1.
menopausal symptoms; menopausal disorder
The range of physical and emotional symptoms brought on by the hormonal changes of middle age — hot flashes, sweating, palpitations, irritability, insomnia. Used of women and, increasingly, of men as 男性更年期障害.
更年期 (the change of life, menopause) + 障害 (disorder, impairment). Note that 更年期 alone names the life stage; 更年期障害 names the symptoms that trouble people during it.
Common collocations
Usage
A neutral medical term, used freely in health articles and at the clinic. Applying it to someone else's bad mood (更年期じゃないの) is a well-known insult, so avoid it as a joke.
