障害(しょうがい) has two main meanings: obstacle/hindrance and disability/impairment.

MEANING 1 - OBSTACLE:

  • 障害(しょうがい)になる (to become an obstacle)
  • 障害(しょうがい)を乗(の)り越(こ)える (to overcome an obstacle)
  • 通信(つうしん)障害(しょうがい) (communication failure/outage)
  • システム障害(しょうがい) (system failure)

MEANING 2 - DISABILITY:

  • 身体(しんたい)障害(しょうがい) (physical disability)
  • 知的(ちてき)障害(しょうがい) (intellectual disability)
  • 視覚(しかく)障害(しょうがい) (visual impairment)
  • 聴覚(ちょうかく)障害(しょうがい) (hearing impairment)
  • 障害者(しょうがいしゃ) (person with disability)

NOTE ON WRITING:
Some organizations and individuals prefer writing 障(しょう)がい instead of 障害(しょうがい) to avoid the negative connotation of the kanji 害(がい) (harm).

NOTE: 障害(しょうがい) and 生涯(しょうがい) (lifetime) are homophones.
