to think better of it; to decide not to go through with something
To stop yourself from carrying out something you had already made up your mind to do. The decision is reversed at the last stage, often after reflection or someone's persuasion, and the subject is the person who was about to act.
Transitivity
- Transitive: the abandoned plan takes を (退職を思いとどまる). It is also very common with no object at all, when the plan is clear from context.
