Common patterns

Kanji: ()める (stop an action), ()める (resign from a job). Hiragana is common for both and is the safe default. Opposite: (つづ)ける (keep doing). Close to (あきら)める, but やめる is simply ceasing, while (あきら)める means abandoning a hope you had. Ichidan verb: te-form やめて.
