Cultural note

Renting a flat in Japan has traditionally required a 連帯保証人(れんたいほしょうにん), usually a parent. Today most landlords instead require, or accept, a 保証会社(ほしょうがいしゃ). The tenant pays it a fee at signing (often half to one month's rent) and a renewal fee every year or two.
