To grasp something for support.
手(て)すりに捕(つか)まる。
To hold on to the handrail.

吊(つ)り革(かわ)に捕(つか)まる。
To hold on to the strap.
枝(えだ)に捕(つか)まって登(のぼ)った。
I climbed holding on to the branches.
電車(でんしゃ)の中(なか)で吊(つ)り革(かわ)に捕(つか)まっていた。
I was holding on to the strap on the train.

捕(つか)まる has two main meanings: 'to be caught/arrested' and 'to hold onto something.'

SENSE 1 - Be caught:

  • 犯人(はんにん)が捕(つか)まる: a criminal is caught

捕(つか)まる uses 捕(ほ) (capture). The related verb 掴(つか)む (to grab) uses different kanji.
