(ちい)さな is a 連体詞(れんたいし) (pre-noun adjectival) — a special word class that can only modify nouns directly. It cannot be conjugated or used as a predicate.

COMPARISON WITH (ちい)さい:

  • (ちい)さな + noun: pre-noun form only ((ちい)さな(いぬ))
  • (ちい)さい + noun: i-adjective form ((ちい)さい(いぬ))
  • Both are interchangeable before nouns, but only (ちい)さい works as a predicate: この(いぬ)(ちい)さい (NOT (ちい)さな)

OPPOSITE:

  • (おお)きな (big — same pre-noun adjectival type)
  • (おお)きい (big — i-adjective)

Note: (ちい)さな and (おお)きな are the only common 連体詞(れんたいし) with corresponding い-adjective forms. Most 連体詞(れんたいし) (like この, あの) have no adjective counterpart.
