三回忌(さんかいき)

CULTURAL NOTE (how the years are counted):

• 一周忌(いっしゅうき): the first anniversary, one year after death
• 三回忌(さんかいき): two years after death; the day of death itself counts as the first
• 七回忌(ななかいき): six years after death
• 十三回忌(じゅうさんかいき), 三十三回忌(さんじゅうさんかいき): later services; many families end the series with the thirty-third

Watch out

The number in 〜回忌(かいき) is one more than the years that have passed: 三回忌(さんかいき) falls two years after death, not three. Only the first anniversary uses 周忌(しゅうき), which counts full years.
