1.
veterinarian; vet
A doctor who treats animals.
獣医 is the everyday word for a vet, used both of the person and, loosely, of the practice you take an animal to. Formation: 獣 'beast' + 医 'doctor'.
The official term is 獣医師 — that is what appears on the licence and in law, in the same way that 医師 is the formal counterpart of the everyday word for a doctor. In conversation 獣医 is normal.
Where they work
- 動物病院: animal hospital — the usual name for a vet's practice, however small
- 獣医クリニック: veterinary clinic
