内税(うちぜい) refers to a pricing method where the displayed price already includes 消費税(しょうひぜい) (consumption tax). This is what shoppers actually pay at the register.

CONTRAST:

  • 内税(うちぜい)/税込(ぜいこみ): tax-inclusive (what you see is what you pay)

COMMON EXPRESSIONS:

JAPAN CONTEXT:
Since April 2021, Japan requires businesses to display 総額表示(そうがくひょうじ) (total price including tax) as the primary price. Before this, many stores showed 外税(そとぜい) (tax-exclusive) prices, which confused shoppers.

NOTE:
税込(ぜいこみ) (tax-included) is used more often than 内税(うちぜい) in everyday speech and on price tags.
