To light a candle, lamp, or other source of light. Can also be used figuratively to kindle hope, passion, or spirit.

仏壇(ぶつだん)の前(まえ)で灯(あか)りを灯(とも)した。

I lit a light in front of the Buddhist altar.

あの先生(せんせい)の言葉(ことば)が、私(わたし)の心(こころ)に希望(きぼう)の灯(ひ)を灯(とも)してくれた。

That teacher's words lit a flame of hope in my heart.

灯(とも)す is a somewhat literary verb for lighting a flame or lamp. More common in writing and formal speech than in casual conversation.
