The act of using one thing in place of another. Refers to both the process of substituting and the substitute itself.

The traditional reading is だいたい, but the reading だいがえ has become common in spoken Japanese. Both are accepted, though だいたい remains standard in formal and written contexts. Not to be confused with the adverb 大体 (roughly, approximately), which is a different word entirely.
