1.
plan, proposal
A suggested course of action or scheme.
2.
idea, thought
A concept or notion for doing something.
案 has two main uses: a plan/idea, and a draft document or proposal. Very productive as a suffix in compound words.
COMMON PATTERNS:
- 案を出す: to propose an idea
- 案が浮かぶ: an idea comes to mind
- 案を練る: to work out a plan
- 案の定: as expected (set phrase)
AS A SUFFIX (~案):
- 法案: bill (legislation)
- 予算案: budget proposal
- 企画案: project proposal
- 代案: alternative plan
- 名案: brilliant idea
- 改善案: improvement proposal
NOTE:
案の定 (as expected, sure enough) is a common set phrase where 案 retains its older meaning of "expectation."
