To locate something that was being looked for or something previously unknown. The transitive form.

鍵(かぎ)を見(み)つけた。

I found the key.

2. to catch, to spot

To notice or discover someone doing something.

彼(かれ)が隠(かく)れているのを見(み)つけた。

I spotted him hiding.

'Catch/spot' meaning

先生(せんせい)に見(み)つけられた。

The teacher caught me.

サボっているところを見(み)つけた。

I caught them slacking off.

嘘(うそ)をついているのを見(み)つけた。

I caught them lying.

警察(けいさつ)に見(み)つけられる前(まえ)に逃(に)げた。

They fled before the police spotted them.
