USAGE:
Less common in traditional Japanese residential architecture than in Western countries, but found in modern buildings. 地下(ちか) alone can mean "underground" or "basement level" (as in 地下(ちか)1(かい), basement floor 1), while 地下室(ちかしつ) specifically means a room below ground.
