A room located below ground level. Can serve as storage, living space, a wine cellar, or shelter.
地下室に荷物を運ぶ。
To carry luggage to the basement.
この家には広い地下室がある。
This house has a spacious basement.
ワインは温度が一定の地下室で保管するのが理想的だ。
Ideally, wine should be stored in a basement where the temperature is constant.
USAGE:
Less common in traditional Japanese residential architecture than in Western countries, but found in modern buildings. 地下 alone can mean "underground" or "basement level" (as in 地下1階, basement floor 1), while 地下室 specifically means a room below ground.
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 地下室に降りる: to go down to the basement
- 地下室に保管する: to store in the basement
