USAGE:
A legal and business term, but widely known in everyday Japanese. 特許(とっきょ)を取(と)る (to obtain a patent) and 特許(とっきょ)を申請(しんせい)する (to apply for a patent) are the most common verb combinations. Japan's patent office is the 特許庁(とっきょちょう).
