Used as a suru verb (看護(かんご)する = to nurse, to care for) or as a noun modifier (看護(かんご)師(し) = nurse). The most common compound is 看護師(かんごし) (nurse), which replaced the older gender-specific terms 看護婦(かんごふ) (female nurse) and 看護士(かんごし) (male nurse) in 2002.
