USAGE:
Used to describe the deepest, most essential quality of a discipline, art, philosophy, or tradition. Often appears in contexts involving mastery or deep understanding achieved through long study or practice. More literary and elevated in register than simply saying 本質(ほんしつ) (essence).

NOTE:
Similar to 真髄(しんずい) (same reading, different first kanji). Both words mean "essence" and are sometimes used interchangeably, but 神髄(しんずい) carries a slightly more spiritual or sacred nuance (using the kanji for "god/spirit"), while 真髄(しんずい) emphasizes truth and authenticity (using the kanji for "true").

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • 神髄(しんずい)()れる: to come into contact with the essence
  • 神髄(しんずい)(きわ)める: to master the essence
  • 神髄(しんずい)(つた)える: to convey the essence
