Whether a person is safe and unharmed. Composed of 安 (safe, peaceful) + 否 (or not). Most commonly used after natural disasters, accidents, or emergencies when checking on the safety of family, friends, or residents.

After the earthquake, I received a safety confirmation email.

USAGE:
In earthquake-prone Japan, 安否確認 (safety confirmation) is a familiar phrase. After major disasters, companies, schools, and organizations use 安否確認 systems to check on employees, students, and members. Phone carriers also provide 災害用伝言ダイヤル (disaster message dial) services for 安否 reporting.
