Compound of ぶどう (grapes) + 酒 (alcohol/liquor). Also written as 葡萄酒 with kanji. In modern Japanese, ワイン is far more common in everyday conversation; ぶどう酒 appears more in literary, formal, or traditional contexts. The 酒 suffix is used for other types of alcohol as well: 日本酒 (sake), 梅酒 (plum wine), 焼酎 (distilled spirit). Japan's main wine-producing region is 山梨県 (Yamanashi Prefecture).
