Compound of ぶどう (grapes) + (しゅ) (alcohol/liquor). Also written as 葡萄酒(ぶどうしゅ) with kanji. In modern Japanese, ワイン is far more common in everyday conversation; ぶどう(しゅ) appears more in literary, formal, or traditional contexts. The (しゅ) suffix is used for other types of alcohol as well: 日本酒(にほんしゅ) (sake), 梅酒(うめしゅ) (plum wine), 焼酎(しょうちゅう) (distilled spirit). Japan's main wine-producing region is 山梨県(やまなしけん) (Yamanashi Prefecture).
