Stubbornly clinging to something, being overly attached to details, rules, or preconceptions. Almost always carries a negative nuance.
形式に拘泥する必要はない。
There's no need to be hung up on formalities.

A formal, literary word. Almost always used with に: 〜に拘泥する (to be fixated on...). Carries a negative nuance — the attachment is seen as excessive or unhelpful. Common objects: 形式に拘泥する (fixate on form), 過去に拘泥する (cling to the past), 細部に拘泥する (be hung up on details). Compare with the more colloquial こだわる, which can be either positive or negative.
