1.
tenure; being in office; holding a position
The period during which someone holds an official position or office. Used for political leaders, executives, and other officials.
Composed of 在 (exist, be present) + 任 (duty, appointment). A formal term used in political and business reporting. Common collocations: 在任中 (during one's tenure), 在任期間 (period of office/tenure), 在任日数 (number of days in office). Not to be confused with the homophone 罪人 (criminal, sinner), which has a completely different meaning and kanji. Similar terms: 在職 (being employed/in a position — broader, includes non-official jobs), 任期 (term of office — the defined period rather than the act of holding office).
