The behavior of trying to establish oneself as superior to others in conversation or social situations, often through subtle boasting, name-dropping, or belittling others' achievements. A modern buzzword in Japanese social commentary.
Originally from animal behavior terminology (mounting to establish dominance), this loanword gained wide currency in Japanese from around 2015 as a buzzword describing competitive social behavior among humans. It is now commonly used in casual conversation, social media, and pop psychology.
The abbreviated form マウント is also very common, especially in the phrase マウントを取る (to assert dominance).
