Composed of 超 (ultra-, super-) and 高層 (high-rise, upper level). In Japanese architecture, a building is generally classified as 超高層 when it exceeds 60 meters in height (roughly 20 stories). The term became common during Japan's construction boom of the 1970s and is strongly associated with the skyscrapers of 新宿副都心.
