Composed of 赤 (red) and ピーマン (bell pepper, from French "piment"). In Japanese supermarkets, the standard green ピーマン is the most common and cheapest variety, while 赤ピーマン and 黄ピーマン (yellow bell pepper) are often sold at a premium. Note that パプリカ (paprika) refers to the larger, thicker-walled colored bell peppers, while 赤ピーマン can refer to either a regular-sized red pepper or a paprika.
