1. to think exhaustively; to brood over; to ponder to the limit
To keep thinking about something intensely, often dwelling on a worry or problem until one is mentally cornered. Usually carries a sense of unhealthy over-thinking.
一人(ひとり)(かんが)()める。
Brood over it alone.
問題(もんだい)(かんが)()めすぎて(ねむ)れない。
I thought so hard about the problem that I couldn't sleep.
(なや)みを一人(ひとり)(かんが)()めると、かえって出口(でぐち)()えなくなる。
When you brood over a worry by yourself, you paradoxically lose sight of the way out.

Compound of (かんが)える (to think) + ()める (to do to the limit). Less common than its near-synonym (おも)()める; somewhat literary.

TRANSITIVITY:
Transitive, taking を for the matter dwelt on, though it is often used intransitively with no object.

SIMILAR WORDS:

  • (おも)()める: to brood/obsess — the everyday word for dwelling on a worry; more common
  • ()()める: to get to the bottom of — implies pursuing a question to a clear conclusion, not anxious brooding
