1. to pull in hand over hand; to haul in; to reel in
To draw in something long and flexible — a rope, thread, net, or line — by moving the hands alternately along it.
糸(いと)を手繰(たぐ)る。
To pull in the thread.
ロープを手繰(たぐ)って船(ふね)を岸(きし)に寄(よ)せた。
I pulled in the rope hand over hand and brought the boat to shore.

2. to trace back; to follow (a memory, a lead)
To follow a memory, a chain of associations, or a thread of evidence back toward its source, as if pulling it in bit by bit.

子(こ)どもの頃(ころ)の記憶(きおく)を手繰(たぐ)り寄(よ)せてみた。
I tried to draw up memories of my childhood.
