The polite form of おめでとう, offered for birthdays, weddings, births, exams passed, promotions, and the New Year. The occasion usually comes first: ご結婚(けっこん)おめでとうございます, お誕生日(たんじょうび)おめでとうございます, 合格(ごうかく)おめでとうございます.

Usage

The reply is ありがとうございます. In writing, the phrase often opens a card and is followed by a wish for the future.

Polite; among friends and family the plain おめでとう is used. In formal writing the phrase may be lengthened to 心(こころ)よりお祝(いわ)い申(もう)し上(あ)げます.
