Happy New Year (said from January 1 onward)
The New Year greeting, said on meeting someone for the first time in the new year and written at the top of New Year's cards; literally 'congratulations on the (year) having opened.' It is used from January 1, never before, and is normally followed by 今年もよろしくお願いします.
Happy New Year. I look forward to another good year with you.
Usage
- Said from January 1 until about the middle of January, once to each person, at the first meeting of the year
- Before the year ends, the parting greeting is 良いお年を
- Not used to a family in mourning, who send notice that they will skip the New Year greetings

- 明けましておめでとう: casual, among friends and family
- あけおめ: slang abbreviation in text messages, often with ことよろ for the second half
