The hottest part of summer, in seasonal greetings the period up to 立秋(りっしゅう) (around August 7).

Summer greetings are sent before the first day of autumn; after that they become late-summer greetings.

Rarely used on its own today. It lives in 暑中(しょちゅう)見舞(みま)い (a summer greeting card) and the set greeting 暑中(しょちゅう)お見舞(みま)い申(もう)し上(あ)げます.

Summer greetings are sent from the end of the rainy season until 立秋(りっしゅう), the first day of autumn in the traditional calendar (around August 7). After that date the card becomes a 残暑(ざんしょ)見舞(みま)い, a greeting for the lingering heat.
