懐石料理(かいせきりょうり)

かいせきりょうり
noun
kaiseki; tea-ceremony course meal
foodculture
1. kaiseki; multi-course meal of the tea ceremony
A light meal of small, seasonal dishes served before tea at a formal tea gathering; by extension, a refined multi-course Japanese meal.
懐石料理(かいせきりょうり)をいただく。
To have a kaiseki meal.
I enjoyed authentic kaiseki cuisine in Kyoto.
Kaiseki is known for small, beautifully arranged portions of seasonal ingredients.

Often shortened to 懐石(かいせき). The name comes from the warm stone (石(いし)) Zen monks are said to have held to their chest (懐(ふところ)) to ease hunger, hence a light meal.

Watch out

会席料理(かいせきりょうり) has the same reading but means a banquet course meal served with sake at inns and restaurants. Menus often mix the two, but strictly 懐石(かいせき) comes before tea and 会席(かいせき) accompanies drinking.
