acquaintance
A person one knows but who is not a close friend.
知り合いに偶然会った。
I ran into an acquaintance by chance.
彼は私の古い知り合いです。
He is an old acquaintance of mine.
知り合いの紹介で仕事を見つけた。
I found a job through an acquaintance's introduction.
知り合い is derived from the verb 知り合う (to get to know each other).
DISTINCTION FROM "FRIEND":
- 知り合い: acquaintance (someone you know)
- 友達/友人: friend (closer relationship)
COMMON EXPRESSIONS:
- 知り合いになる (to become acquainted)
- 知り合いを通して (through an acquaintance)
- 知り合いの知り合い (an acquaintance's acquaintance)
NOTE:
Using 知り合い to describe someone implies a less close relationship than 友達.
