Usage

On its own 他力(たりき) is uncommon in everyday Japanese; it lives mainly in 他力(たりき)本願(ほんがん), "leaving things to others," usually as criticism (他力(たりき)本願(ほんがん)ではうまくいかない).

Etymology

A Pure Land Buddhist term: 他力(たりき) is the saving power of Amida Buddha, and 他力(たりき)本願(ほんがん) is reliance on Amida's vow to save all beings. The secular sense of depending on other people is a later extension, and Buddhist organizations have objected to it.
