1. to take up (a position); to assume (a role)
To start occupying a position, job, or role. Often used for taking on new responsibilities or positions.
新(あたら)しい職(しょく)に就(つ)いた。
I took up a new job.
社長(しゃちょう)の座(ざ)に就(つ)く。
To assume the position of president.
2. to go to (bed, sleep)
To settle into bed or go to sleep. Common in formal or literary contexts.
床(とこ)に就(つ)く時間(じかん)だ。
It's time to go to bed.

就(つ)く means to take up a position, role, or state. Written with the kanji 就(つ) to distinguish it from other つく verbs.

Transitivity
