2. hypothetical, supposing
Used to indicate a hypothetical situation or assumption, often in the pattern 仮に〜としても.
(かり)にそうだとしても、問題(もんだい)はない。
Even supposing that were the case, there would be no problem.
(かり)(かれ)()なかったら、どうする?
Hypothetically, if he doesn't come, what will we do?
(かり)百万円(ひゃくまんえん)あったとしても、この(いえ)()えない。
Even if you hypothetically had one million yen, you couldn't buy this house.

Modifies nouns directly as 仮の〜 (temporary ~). In sense 2, used adverbially as 仮に at the start of a sentence to introduce a hypothesis. Written with different kanji, 仮 also appears in many compounds.
