Acting on one's own initiative rather than passively waiting. The opposite of 受動的 (passive). Used in formal and academic contexts to describe an approach where the subject takes the initiative.

USAGE:
The opposite of 受動的(じゅどうてき) (passive). In grammar, 能動態(のうどうたい) means the active voice and 受動態(じゅどうたい) means the passive voice.

Compared to 積極的(せっきょくてき) (proactive, enthusiastic), 能動的(のうどうてき) is more formal and academic. 積極的(せっきょくてき) is the everyday word for being proactive or enthusiastic, while 能動的(のうどうてき) is used more in educational, academic, or technical discussions.
