CULTURE:
Also called ひな祭(まつ)り (Doll Festival). One of the 五節句(ごせっく) (five seasonal festivals). The name comes from the peach blossoms ((もも)(はな)) that bloom around this time. Families with daughters display elaborate tiered platforms (雛壇(ひなだん)) with ornamental dolls representing the imperial court. Traditional foods include 菱餅(ひしもち) (diamond-shaped rice cakes), (ひな)あられ (bite-sized rice crackers), and 甘酒(あまざけ) or 白酒(しろざけ).
