Most often takes abstract objects — opinions, rights, traditions, individuality. With a person as the object (相手(あいて)を尊重(そんちょう)する), it means to respect their wishes and dignity, not to look up to them. To express admiration for a person, use 敬(うやま)う or 尊敬(そんけい)する instead.
