A compound of 既 (already) and 述 (to state, to describe). A formal written-language word used to refer back to earlier content in reports, papers, and official documents. Rarely used in spoken Japanese.
USAGE:
Almost exclusively a written-language word. Commonly appears as 既述の (the aforementioned) or 既述のとおり (as previously stated).
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 既述のとおり — as previously stated
- 既述の内容 — the previously described content
- 既述の理由 — the reasons already stated
SIMILAR WORDS:
- 前述 — aforementioned; very similar in meaning but 前述 emphasizes sequence (what came before), while 既述 emphasizes that it has already been done
- 記述 — description, statement; a homophone with a different meaning — the act of writing or describing, rather than a reference to prior content
