A compound of () (already) and (じゅつ) (to state, to describe). A formal written-language word used to refer back to earlier content in reports, papers, and official documents. Rarely used in spoken Japanese.

USAGE:
Almost exclusively a written-language word. Commonly appears as 既述(きじゅつ)の (the aforementioned) or 既述(きじゅつ)のとおり (as previously stated).

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • 既述(きじゅつ)のとおり — as previously stated
  • 既述(きじゅつ)内容(ないよう) — the previously described content
  • 既述(きじゅつ)理由(りゆう) — the reasons already stated

SIMILAR WORDS:

  • 前述(ぜんじゅつ) — aforementioned; very similar in meaning but 前述(ぜんじゅつ) emphasizes sequence (what came before), while 既述(きじゅつ) emphasizes that it has already been done
  • 記述(きじゅつ) — description, statement; a homophone with a different meaning — the act of writing or describing, rather than a reference to prior content
