The act of being released or dismissed from military duty. Used for both voluntary and involuntary separation from the military.
Composed of 除 (to remove, to exclude) + 隊 (unit, troop). The opposite of 入隊 (enlisting). In modern Japan, this word appears mainly in historical contexts (WWII narratives) and in discussions of other countries' militaries.
