(つくり)

つくり
noun
right-hand component of a kanji; tsukuri
1. right-hand component of a kanji; the right-side radical element
The right-hand element of a kanji that has a left-right structure. It contrasts with (へん), the left-side element. For example, in () (time), () is the (へん) and () is the (つくり). The (つくり) often carries a phonetic hint, while the (へん) carries semantic meaning.
漢字(かんじ)(つくり)
The right-hand component of a kanji.
()」の(つくり)は「()」だ。
The right-hand component of "時" is "寺".
(つくり)()(かた)のヒントになることが(おお)い。
The right-hand component often gives a hint about the reading.
漢字(かんじ)(へん)(つくり)()()わせでできているものが(おお)い。
Many kanji are made up of a combination of a left-side radical and a right-side component.

Literally "the made thing" or "construction," from the verb (つく)る. In kanji analysis, (つくり) refers specifically to the right-hand portion of a character that can be split into left and right elements.

Note that つくり has several unrelated meanings (construction, make, facial features, sashimi-style fish — お造(つく)り). The kanji-radical sense is written (つくり) when written in kanji, but is very often written in hiragana.

USAGE:
Used in discussions of kanji etymology, dictionary lookup, and character description. Native speakers sometimes describe unfamiliar kanji as "(へん)は〜、(つくり)は〜" (the left side is 〜, the right side is 〜).
