A formal reference to content written above or previously in a document, originating from vertical right-to-left writing where earlier content appears to the right.
右 (right) + 記 (written). In traditional Japanese vertical writing, text flows from right to left, so earlier content is to the right. 右記 therefore means "what was written previously" or "the above."
