Japanese mustard; hot mustard
A pungent yellow mustard paste made from ground mustard seeds, used as a condiment with natto, oden, tonkatsu, and other Japanese dishes. Sharper and hotter than Western mustards.
納豆にからしを入れる。
I put mustard in my natto.
おでんにからしをつけて食べた。
I ate oden with mustard.
練りからしは少量でも鼻にツンとくる辛さがある。
Prepared karashi has a sharp, nose-tingling heat even in small amounts.
Written in kanji as 芥子 or 辛子, but kana is most common on packaging and menus. Comes in tubes or small packets and is a standard accompaniment in Japanese cuisine.
