To end up better off than one otherwise would — paying less, getting extra value, or gaining some advantage. The direct opposite of 損(そん)をする.
まとめて買(か)うと得(とく)をする。
You come out ahead if you buy in bulk.
早(はや)めに予約(よやく)したので、千円(せんえん)得(とく)をした。
I booked early, so I saved a thousand yen.
会員(かいいん)になると、割引(わりびき)や特典(とくてん)があって得(とく)をすることが多(おお)い。

The gain is usually financial, but it can be any advantage — time, reputation, or convenience. 得(とく) also stands alone as a na-adjective (得(とく)な買(か)い物(もの), a good buy) and in the polite お得(とく), which is everywhere in advertising.
