to come out ahead; to gain an advantage; to benefit
To end up better off than one otherwise would — paying less, getting extra value, or gaining some advantage. The direct opposite of 損をする.
If you become a member, there are discounts and perks, so you often come out ahead.
The gain is usually financial, but it can be any advantage — time, reputation, or convenience. 得 also stands alone as a na-adjective (得な買い物, a good buy) and in the polite お得, which is everywhere in advertising.
Common patterns
- ...と得をする: you come out ahead if ...
- 得をした気分: the feeling of having gotten a good deal
- 誰も得をしない: nobody benefits
