Sets aside the alternatives just raised and moves to what holds regardless of them. Used to steer a discussion toward the conclusion, and common in business speech and writing.

At any rate, we need an answer by tomorrow.

Usage

Stands at the head of a sentence or clause, usually after two or more possibilities have been mentioned. Slightly formal but at home in ordinary polite conversation as well as in writing.
