Stating something formally to the highest-ranking listener imaginable — the emperor, or a kami at a shrine. Survives today almost only in Shinto ritual language and in historical writing.
An extremely formal word with no everyday use; a learner will meet it at shrines, in historical drama, and in writing about the imperial court.
