To be thrown off balance emotionally by something sudden or alarming. Almost always used in the negative to praise someone for staying calm.
Usage
The affirmative is unusual. Learners will meet this verb almost entirely as 動じない, 動じることなく, or 動じずに, describing composure under pressure.
Common forms
Transitivity
Intransitive. The cause is marked with に: 批判に動じない (to be unmoved by criticism).
Similar words
- 慌てる: to panic, to get flustered — the visible reaction; 動じる is the inner wobble
- 驚く: to be surprised — a neutral reaction, with no loss of composure implied
動ずる is the older written form and still appears in formal prose.
